Physical Condition
& Expectations
How fit do you need to be to start Aikido? The esoteric aspects of aikido can be enjoyed by just about anyone but the martial art of aikido itself does require some movement. Higher levels of movement will benefit from good physical condition but you don’t need to be athletic to begin training. Sincere pursuit of Aikido is excellent for young and old people alike. Aikido is most comfortable when strong, relaxed, and flexible.
Equipment
Bogu
We often engage in full contact bokken and jo training so white oak or stronger is preferred. If you have a bokken and you want to use it in class, please let Joe have a look at it first.
Bokken
Japanese white oak with a thick leather tsuba is ideal. Ask a teacher if we have a preferred supplier for leather tsuba before buying one online.
Jo
This is a japanese fighting staff that is commonly used in aikido training. This has to be something strong like white oak for your safety.
Gi
A plain white gi with long pants is the preferred uniform for beginners. If you have a gi from other training it’s probably ok to wear. In Aikido it’s especially helpful if the sleeves are 3/4 length.
Hakama
If you have been recently promoted we are currently encouraging any dark color hakama of your choosing.
